He is a biological oceanographer studying plankton biology and ecology and the roles of marine organisms on biogeochemical cycles. He has been worked on the influence of physical variability in western boundary currents of the North Pacific Ocean, Kuroshio and Oyashio, on biogeochemical cycles, food-web dynamics and fisheries production. The essential aim of his studies is to understand the processes and mechanisms of marine ecosystem response to natural and anthropogenic perturbations for the wise use of marine ecosystem services.
